Protecting your hair during harmattan
Harmattan has come with its dusty dry winds and extreme temperatures. Whether you have Locs or you have loose natural coily hair, Harmattan is the season to take extra good care of your hair.
Tips to properly care for your hair during these season from Maharanifiyin
1. Additional Protection
Use an extra moisturising shampoo especially one that is formulated to be gentle on the hair. Avoid clarifying or voluminizing shampoos as these will strip the hair of its essential oils. Also avoid using harsh medicated shampoos and conditioners as these can dry out and irritate the scalp.
During this time, don’t forget to protect your hair at night. Your cotton pillowcase is not your friend especially during the dry season. Cotton is an organic fibre that draws moisture away from your hair and the friction between your hair and the cotton also breaks your hair. So remember to wear a hairnet, silk scarf, durag or sleep cap at night to create a barrier and protect your hair.
2. Deep condition and treat often
This is the best time to pamper your hair. Indulge in deep conditioning treatments every two weeks and hot oil treatments in between. The heat used in deep conditioning opens the cuticle and allows the conditioner to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft restoring proteins and strengthen the hair.
The hairs natural oils take longer to travel the entire length of the hair shaft of natural hair thus use hot oil treatments to help restore oils faster to your hair. The oils increase shine and reduce frizziness.
For Lock Wearers, it is advisable to focus more on hot oil treatments during this period as it helps to restore moisture to the locks and helps them feel soft and healthy.
3. Protective styles are a great option
If you want to wear braided extensions or try on a hair weave this is the time. Tuck your hair away and protect it from the harsh weather. Natural hair is versatile and you can wear weaves just like anyone else.
So this is your chance to try on a new look with a weave cut.
People with Locs can also get extension styles depending on the size of their Locs so ask your stylist what to do.
4. Get back what is sucked out
Since the Harmattan strips your hair of moisture, you have to endeavour to replace or replenish the moisture. This is the perfect time to mix a hair spritz using distilled water, your favourite base oils such as olive oil, some essential oils and glycerine.
The glycerine acts as a humectant and traps and seals the moisture into the hair, reducing brittleness and dryness. Spray it into your hair or on your Locs once every two days or more, depending on the needs of your hair.
Some hair textures are more parched and thus require a “drink” of water more than once a day. Some people use commercial leave in conditioners but the simpler and more natural you go, the better. Give your hair the essentials- water and essential oils- your hair will thank you.
5. Say “No!”(Avoid) to dust
The dry clouds of Harmattan dust are upon us. So remember that dust can quickly clog up your pores and cause scalp irritation so wash often and use a head wrap or a scarf if your route is particularly dusty.
Get the best out of your hair.

ASUU set to suspend strike this week
Indications have emerged that the Academic Staff Union of Universities may call off the over four-month-old strike on Thursday.
Barring a last-minute change, the National Executive Committee of ASUU will meet on Wednesday night to consider the position of the congresses of the over 50 public universities on the offer made by the Federal government to revamp the institutions.
The union met with a Federal Government team led by President Goodluck Jonathan last Tuesday in Abuja.
The ASUU leadership, after briefing the zonal coordinators on the offer, had directed the local branches to organise congress meetings between Friday last week and Tuesday (tomorrow).
This is to enable all the lecturers to make input into the action the union would take after its NEC meeting on Thursday.
However, feelers from most universities that had organised their congresses revealed that ASUU would suspend the strike after the Thursday NEC meeting.
In some universities, including the Obafemi Awolowo University and the Lagos State University that have scheduled their congress meetings for Monday (today), union leaders and lecturers expressed hope that the strike would end this week.
Also, some top officials of the union in some of the nine zones of ASUU said even though they were not happy with the plan by the government to inject N220bn yearly into the public universities for the next five years, they were pleased that a commitment had been obtained by the union.
Though the Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Adesola, confirmed that the NEC meeting would hold on Wednesday, he did not say whether the strike would be called off or not.
“Yes, the NEC will hold on Wednesday evening but ASUU has a process which we are going to follow. NEC reserves the right to call off the strike after due consultation with members and this is why congresses are being called in all the chapters of the union. Please, wait till after the congress,” he told one of our correspondents on the telephone.
But another source said, “Our NEC meeting will hold between Wednesday night and Thursday. Our chapters have started holding meetings to discuss the Federal Government’s offer. This is to allow input from all the lecturers. We have to carry them along to avoid disunity since there are moves by some elements to infiltrate us.”
Another source told one of our correspondents that some members had expressed mixed feelings about the Federal Government’s new offer based on its refusal to honour past agreements.
“The radicals among us are sceptical about this latest offer. They do not believe that government will respect the agreement. Their view is that government only wants to deceive the union to call off the strike before it will jettison it.”
A top official of the union, who confirmed the fears, told one of our correspondents that although members’ opinions at the zonal congresses were divided over the government’s offer, the majority still decided to give the government the benefit of the doubt.
He also said that the majority opinion was that the review of the agreement which was supposed to hold this year should be postponed till next year in the interest of peace.
The official added, “Members were persuaded because President Goodluck Jonathan personally met with the union. They felt since the President was involved in the negotiation this time around, the government would not say that it was arm-twisted to make the offer.
“This is the problem we are having with the 2009 agreement. By now we should be talking about a review but we are still having troubles with implementation.
“Although feelers across the zones are that we should call off the strike, we are going to put down the government offer in black and white and make it public so that nobody accuses us tomorrow of asking for too much.”
Some universities are expected to hold their congresses on Monday (today) to discuss the outcome of the zonal congresses held at nine centres across the country last week.
A source at the meeting between the government and ASUU told one of our correspondents that the government after a long debate agreed to inject N220bn yearly for the next five years beginning from 2014.
He had said, “The meeting should be the longest that we have ever had on this crisis but I can tell you that both parties were frank all through the discussions. The parties also showed commitment towards ending the crisis. The President in particular showed that he was serious about ending the strike and that was why he offered to release over N1tn to the universities in the next five years.
“The money will be released on a yearly basis at N220bn per annum beginning from 2014. For the outgoing year, the Federal Government will only release N100bn and this has been processed.
“In order to show commitment to this deal, the money will be kept at the Central Bank of Nigeria and will be released on a quarterly basis to the universities. So, there won’t be any problem about funding the deal.”
The source added that the National Universities Commission and the Trade Union Congress would be joint guarantors of the new agreement while the Minister of Education would be the implementation officer.
He said that the government also agreed, among other things, to revamp the public universities by ensuring that all the issues that always lead to strike were dealt with once and for all.

NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES TO OPEN NEXTWEEK WITH OR WITHOUT ASUU
President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa.
An official of the Vice President’s office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the Universities resume next week.
The President will at next Monday’s meeting present to the ASUU leadership the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike.
A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the Universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements.
Already, most of the governing councils of the Universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the Universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan.
It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the Universities system from the direction it is
facing at present.

Fashion tips: FOR FLAT TUMMY check out these tips
Step one:
If you want to build muscle and burn fat at the same time, you have to perform circuit training, three days per week. How can you achieve this? Indulge in full body exercises like lunges, push-ups, and pull-ups, for one set of 15 repetitions. Don't forget to follow every exercise with one minute of jumping rope. You should be able to burn around 500 to 600 calories per workout.
Step two:
You have to work on your abdominal muscles three times in the week. Crunches and leg raises for three sets of 20 repetitions should be done. Also, do planks by holding your body in a push-up position on your elbows for 30 to 60 seconds for four sets.
Step three:
The kind of food you will eat in this period is vital in bringing about any change. Natural foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and pastas, chicken, beef, fish and low fat dairy should replace processed foods full of sugar.
Step four:
To minimize water retention, lower your sodium intake. This means you need to avoid salt. You can flavour your food with other herbs and spices instead.
Step five:
Stressing and anxiety can cause the over-production of a certain hormone called cortisol, which encourages weight gain about the belly area. So try to keep your cool!

DRESSING FOR THIS COLD WEATHER
THINK ABOUT YOUR ACTIVITY LEVEL
A backcountry hike or cross-country ski is going to turn your body into a convection oven, while riding a lift will be more of a hot and cold interval. Think about whether your activity is aerobic or stop-and-go before you get dressed.
LAYER YOUR CLOTHING
If you layer correctly, you can enjoy your activity longer and not have to concern yourself with feeling cold or even hot. And regardless of your budget, there are ways to accomplish this. More on layering below
WEAR THE RIGHT BASE LAYER
Sometimes the "warmest" long underwear isn't what you need. If you are engaged in a high-energy, all-out cardio sport, go for a lightweight wickable base layer that will keep you dry. Otherwise, a midweight base layer is great for most purposes. Only in really cold weather or when you're fairly inactive (e.g., camping expedition) do you need a heavyweight base layer.
ADD A MID-LAYER FOR WARMTH
Mid-layers add insulation to help retain heat that your body creates, and are worn between the base layer and outer jacket if needed. Examples of insulating mid-layers include a fleece vest, a down sweater, or a synthetic jacket made of PrimaLoft® or Thermore®.
WEAR AN OUTER SHELL
Forget about bulky coats. Wear an outer shell (over your mid-layer) to shed water and snow. Layering will give you more versatility, depending on the weather and your activity. Outerwear that is waterproof with increased breathability will be more adaptable and can help transfer moisture away from your body to keep you dry and protected from the elements.
LOOK FOR VENTS
When you perspire from high-energy activity, moisture builds up inside your outerwear. And jackets or pants do not insulate well when wet. Look for core vents on jackets or thigh vents on pants. Regulating your interior climate will help you stay dry and comfortable.
CONNECT YOUR OUTERWEAR PANTS TO YOUR JACKET
A jacket-to-pant connect system keeps out snow and cold, especially on those heavy powder days. I swore by these out in Utah. As well as sealing out wetness, a connect system will prevent the snowskirt on your jacket from riding up. This is a great feature for snowboarding or skiing. All EMS Jackets with snowskirts feature a jacket-to-pant connection. Another great option is a snow bib.
TRY ON YOUR OUTERWEAR
When you try on a jacket or pant, do yourself a favor and move in it - raise up your hands, bend over and touch your toes, squat as if you are fixing your boots. Think about what you want the outerwear to do - cover every inch of your skin in freezing weather? Let you bend your knees to ollie?
RESPECT THE SUN
We all wear hats and gloves, but don't forget about your eyes. It's not uncommon for skiers without protective eyewear to burn their eyeballs. And the sun damage can be just as strong on cloudy days. Wear sunglasses or goggles with UV protection, and wear sunscreen and lip balm. Your headwear will also protect your from the sun.
KEEP YOUR FEET WARM
How many times have your feet been way too cold? Wool or wool blend socks are great natural insulators, even when wet. For most cold-weather sports, wear wicking liner socks and midweight synthetic socks. Make sure you fit footwear with heavier socks for more warmth. Footwear that constricts your foot will constrict your blood flow and cause your feet to be cold. Consider gaiters to keep snow/water from coming over the tops of your boots.

Best Dressed Of The Week (who do you go for?) (1)Laura Vandervoort In Alex Perry,(2) Zachary Quinto In Dior Homme &(3) David Gandy In Dolce & Gabbana.
Best dressed was a tight race between Nicole Kidman in Prada and Laura Vandervoort in Alex Perry, with Laura the eventual winner.
Some of you were shocked to see Laura take the lead as you felt there wasn’t anything particularly special about her LWD but, as pointed out, it’s the styling which took this look into another league.
When it came to the fellas you had a harder time picking a winner; Zachary Quinto in Dior Homme and David Gandy in Dolce & Gabbana tied with 36% of your votes.
I can see the dilemma. Zachary’s look was sleek and this was quite a different look for him, whereas David’s dapper three-piece suit had us swooning.
I eventually went for David.

Elizabeth Hurley In Versace Collection – Bloomingdales Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month
As an ambassador, Elizabeth Hurley attended the Estee Lauder We’re Stronger Together – Celebrating Unity in the Fight Against Breast Cancer event at Bloomingdale’s on Tuesday in New York City.
As is customary, the British actress wore a pink frock.
Her pale-pink sequin-embellished dress enriched by a matching belt with a gold buckle from the Versace Collection was just styled with pale-pink platform shoes. With all the bling from her dress, I think she decided that jewels would’ve been overkill.
Wavy locks and glossy lips completed her look.

OAP 'Toke Makinwa' wore these clothes just a couple of weeks ago at the Glam report TV launch! While Miss kelekele 'Tiwa Savage' wore the cute dress by Bridget Awosika from way back January 2012 . What do you think of both looks? Who wore it better? and would you wear a dress someone else actually wore years back? what does that imply as in celebrity fashion? I'd love to hear from you

...
Top ten fashion tips
(1)Know your Body: Know your measurements before you shop. Not only will it cut down the time you spend trying on clothes, it will help you choose outfits that fit your body perfectly. Among the most important body parts to measure are your bust, chest, hips and waist.
(2)Don't Go Too Tight Or Too Loose: Dressing for your size doesn't just mean nixing clothes that are too tight from your wardrobe. It also means you shouldn't wear clothes that are too baggy. Both will make you look frumpy.
(3)Make Sure You Can Walk In Them: There are some occasions we'd sacrifice comfort for fashion. After all, four inch heels guarantee that legs-for-miles look. But if it looks better than it actually feels on your foot, you probably won't wear it. Don't waste your money (or endure the pain).
(4)Peek-A-Boo Isn't Cute: Button down blouses are intended to do one thing and one thing alone — stay buttoned down. It looks sloppy if we can see what lies beneath your shirt.
(5)Be A Lone Wolf: Shop solo. You'll be able to concentrate more on hunting down exactly what you're looking for. You'll save a lot of time while you're at it too.
(6)Remove Lint: A lint roller is a must-have (cat lovers, you know what we're talking about). Give your outfit a few quick swipes before heading out the door (don't forget your back and behind your legs) to catch any unwanted hair and dust on your clothing.
(7)The Power Of Peplum: Worried about your waist or hips? Try peplum for an instant slimming effect. It flatters every figure and does wonders at hiding unsightly bulge.
(8)Try On Three Sizes, Not One: Shoe sizes vary among designers and brands. Start by trying on your usual shoe size, then try on one pair that's a half-size smaller and a second pair that's a half-size larger. When in doubt, buy the shoes that are a half-size larger
(9)Know Your Colours: Know which colours will flatter you the most by figuring out if the undertones in your skin are either warm or cold. The experts at The Fashion Spot say women with cool undertones look best in white, black, gray, silver, and shades of blue. Women with warm undertones will be dazzling in shades of yellow, gold, brown, green and red.
(10)Organize Your Closet: Organize your closet. This way you'll be able to see what you own (and actually wear it). Separate your clothes by garment. Figure out what what can be folded neatly and what needs to be hanged. Make sure you get the right hangers for shirts, skirts and pants. Use storage shelves to store your purses and intimates and buy a shoe rack.

Okey Bakassy's comment about Jim Iyke's deliverance
Okey Bakassy seems to be very upset about the way Nigerians have voiced out so much displeasure over Jim iyke’s “deliverance” at T.B Joshua’s church.. Read what Okey said below…
“Yesterday was The 53rd Anniversary of Nigeria’s ‘Independence’, I refused to comment or send messages for reasons u and I know. If u are reading this message, u are lucky to be alive. Thank God.
I’m fed up with all the noise about my Actor colleague who gained Independence from ‘demonic influence ‘ or ‘Deliverance’ at Synagogue. I respect him for seeking spiritual help when others are shying away from the reality of their situation.
Even those who are ‘Demons’ themselves are throwing insults at Jim. Our level of hypocrisy in Nigeria is nauseating. Established ‘Sinners’ find it convenient to throw stones at those whose stories become public, making it more difficult for people to seek help.
If you have never presented yourself for ‘Deliverance’ keep quiet because ur not sure of what forces are speaking through you.
Congrats Jim for being ‘man enough’……
Have a blessed day pals”. @okeybakassy
